Capture Aware Sequential Waterfilling for LoRaWAN Adaptive Data Rate

LoRaWAN (Long 1 Range Wide Area Network) is an attractive network infrastructure and protocol suite for ultra low power Internet of Things devices. Even if the technology itself quite mature specified, currently deployed wireless resource allocation strategies are still coarse based on rough heuristics. This paper proposes innovative “sequential waterfilling” strategy assigning spreading factors to End Devices. Our design relies three complementary approaches: i) equalize Time-on-Air packets transmitted by system’s Devices in each factor’s group; ii) balance across multiple gateways iii) keep into account channel capture, which our experimental results show be very substantial LoRa. While retaining extremely simple scalable implementation, this yields a significant improvement (up 38%) capacity over Adaptive Data Rate used many operators basis suggested Semtech, appears robust different operating/load conditions topology configurations.
